Staircase Challenge: Week 3

Here we are at week 3, and we have had a slow week chez McG. The cold has hit us all and we spent the weekend nursing hot honey and lemon in front of the fire.

I did get some work done towards the end of last week and I finally stopped the staircase from creaking, which I am absolutely chuffed about. I'm not too far behind the other ladies in the challenge, and I'm psyched to get going again... once we've all stopped sneezing that is.

Here is what is still on that to-do list:
  1. Sand back the plaster for the entire stairwell - I'm still silently screaming about the 2 weeks lack of progress here *draws John 'the evils'*
  2. Prime and paint the stairwell walls
  3. Fit plastic packers and glue to stop squeaks
  4. Glue all the gaps to stop squeaks
  5. Sand back the filler
  6. Prime the last 3 stairs
  7. Fit beading between stringer and the plasterboard
  8. Fit beading on corner under-sidey bit Nailed it! (sorry)
  9. Paint the entire staircase (twice)
  10. Floor varnish over the painted stairs - pretty much decided to skip this part now.
  11. Stick on tread gripy strips - I'm still looking into alternatives to these. If anyone can link me up to a paint-on-clear-but-textured-floor-paint-product available in the UK drop me a comment plsthnx.
The others are really getting somewhere. I think the challenge is really helping motivate us all, which is exactly what it was meant to do.

Don't forget to pop over to the other DIY dueler's blogs and check them out. (we're not strictly dueling but I'm not sure what the correct word is for a 6 way duel)

See ya'll next week

  1. Kit busted her thumb. I have exams. So a cold really only means that you're keeping up very well with the rest of us! Ha. You're making progress though, so I can't tell you how excited I am that our challenge is getting so much work done! Can't wait to see more.

    1. Aw, Thanks Sarah.

We are all having equal (yet completely different) set-backs. You are doing so well though, looking forward to seeing next weeks post.

I've been loving hooking up with all you equally mad guys, it was the kick up the ass I really needed. Hope we do it again sometime too.

  2. You could use varnish and mix sand in with it so it grips....Or you can mix it in with your paint to give it a little grip.

    1. I'm not sure you could do that to be honest, but I might look into it if I can find a genuine product in the shops here.

    2. http://www.rsci.com/sharkgrip-slip-resistant-additive-5258.html <---from everything I can find online it's basically sand or silica that's added into paint. Ask at your paint store about no-slip additives to your paint.

    3. We're in the UK. We've had no luck finding a non-slip additive product over here.

We've decided not to mix in any sand ourselves as we would be too afraid to totally ruin the whole job.

  3. Ohhh, look! I don't know how set you are on your grippy paint idea and if runners are out of the question, but I thought this was pretty http://loftandcottage.blogspot.com/2011/06/diy-nailhead-stair-runner.html

    1. Ohhhh, Micha, I do like that.

      I'm thinking out loud here...

We've talked about a runner in the future if we don't like the plain stair look. We are planning for these stairs to be a real POP in our open-plan living room. They are going to be very bright... which might be awesome, or might be too much.

The rest of the house has hardwood flooring with no carpeting, would it look odd if I just had a stair runner and no other carpets?

To be perfectly honest I'm not even sure we really need to do 'grippy paint' but 2 of Small's friends have slipped on the corner stairs already (maybe they would slip on any stairs, small children often do) Plus, if we put grippy paint on there would be no fun 'bumping' on bums down the stairs.

Thanks for the idea, I am bookmarking it for possible future use :)
