Big Blue Bed - The interview

Hello readers,

I love having a good nosey into someone elses crafting, so I thought I would start my own little series of interviews - just an excuse to peer at other peoples goodies really, but I won't tell if you don't ;)

So here is my first Interview, with Alix from Big Blue Bed,

she sells some beautiful little accesories from her shop on Etsy

How did you come up with your shop name 'Big Blue Bed'?

It seems an odd name but it started out because our bed was big and blue. I used to spend a lot of time in it or on it - reading, writing and creating and playing with my daughter.

What is your favourite item to make and why?

I love making Dorset Buttons. They are small and intricate. I love the fact that something beautiful appears from a hoop and thread, and also that it is quite an old craft.

I really love those dorset buttons can you tell me anything about their history?

They were made by people, probabaly as a cottage industry, before the Industrial Revolution when machines then took over the button making. So now instead of some little old lady going blind in her ill lit cottage making them...I am!

What do you love most about your craft?

I think I love the fact that you can take something, fabric, or yarn or thread, and create something entirely new. I love colours and putting these together.

What do you find most challanging about your craft?

I design and make the patterns myself which can be challenging, even something seemingly as simple as a little zipped purse - it is at first difficult for me to draw out what is in my head.

What else do you like to do with your time?

I have a daughter who is 6 so I spend time with her. I work part-time as a playworker and I am currently studying for a diploma in Playwork (which I am enjoying very much). And I read - mostly crime such as Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh and Margery Alingham..and of course Georgette Heyer's romantic novels.

Anything else you want the people to know about your shop?

Well, I am always happy to make custom items for people and love the encouragement and freindship whch I receive from people in the craft online community.

I'd like to thank Alix for taking the time to answer my questions and for giving us the opportunity to take a look into her world. I hope you'll agree with me that her creations are really beautiful and unique.

Enjoy
